This specialty encaustic workshop is designed for artists and curious beginners who want to go beyond surface-level techniques of encaustic collage and explore the expressive possibilities of wax itself.
In a small, focused group, we’ll work with encaustic as a sculptural and painterly medium — building layers of texture, carving and scraping into wax, creating intentional pattern, and working with multiple wax colors. You’ll also experiment with embedding small three-dimensional objects directly into the wax, learning how encaustic can hold depth, weight, and form.
While no prior encaustic experience is required, this class moves at a more exploratory pace and introduces tools, materials, and approaches not covered in the botanical collage workshops. The emphasis is on process, experimentation, and developing confidence with encaustic techniques you can carry into your own work.
This workshop is ideal if you want to:
Explore encaustic beyond collage and botanicals
Learn how to build and manipulate wax for texture and depth
Carve, scrape, and pattern wax layers
Work with multiple wax colors and translucency
Embed 3D elements into encaustic surfaces
Learn in a small, focused setting with hands-on guidance
All materials and tools are provided. Participants will complete several experimental panels while learning techniques that can be adapted to future projects.
Group Size: Limited to 5 participants
Format: Technique-focused, hands-on studio workshop
Skill Level: Beginner-friendly, process-driven
Duration & Location:3 Hours, Amy’s Dome Studio in Rollinsville, CO
12-3pm
